Change! - The Horror of it all!

A few weeks ago I got back from my first solo trip and everything all of a sudden felt different. My relationships with a few people changed, people around me started acting differently. Everyone seemed a lot busier than when I left. Now if that’s because my mind is a lot quieter or whether it's just plain old circumstance I can’t tell but it sure as hell bothered me. Mostly because I couldn’t control it and turn things back to the way they were. The truth of the matter “ It is what it is!”

“Words of wisdom you might say (eye roll)” but the fact is that change is inevitable and accepting, “said change” in whatever regard be it personal or professional is hard for everyone. Because there is not a soul on this planet, that likes all kinds of change. We are social beings that pride ourselves on consistency and regularity. We have rules and norms for everything in our society and lives. We are supposed to drive a certain way, conduct our businesses a certain way, not lie, obey the 10 commandments (eye roll again…). Honestly, if we didn’t then there would be total anarchy in the world considering that not everyone has the same ethics and values. Like they say “One man's faux pas is another man's virtue.”

As beings of familiarity, we resist change with everything we have. But the truth of the matter is the only thing constant in our lives is Change itself. We resist it because it’s unfamiliar. The fear of the unknown! And that which is unknown can’t be controlled and therefore cannot; or rather will not be embraced. But the truth is the change will occur irrespective of whether we welcome it or not. The only thing within our control is how hard we make it on ourselves.

A few things helped me “Readjust” so to speak to my new circumstances:

1.     Overthinking is a waste of time. If overthinking could be cashed in I would be a millionaire by now. But it doesn’t. So go busy your mind with something else.
2.     Shifting energies on things that help you channel this excess energy is to achieve something more tangible will help you calm the nerves. This gives you a sense of achievement and also diverts your mind from the existing circumstances, which will inevitably have you staring down a very long empty box of Pringles.
3.     Making peace with it will help the transition a lot easier. Now making peace doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to fall in love with the idea. Just accepting it will lead to indifference and once you are indifferent it wouldn’t matter as much.

I hate change just as much as the next misoneist. And if resistance could change the situation the Himalayas would be in the South Pole. But losing your mental peace every time everything isn’t “just so” will drive you to peel the paint off the walls.

Einstein once said, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is considered a sign of insanity.

So grab control of what you can and regain your composure and accomplish something great today.

But before you do, always remember Smile, Breathe and Go Slowly…….
